Tacoma Plant Hosts Science Classes at Liberty Middle School
On November 18th through 21st, 18 CMA employees volunteered in a presentation about Toray to 7th graders at Liberty Middle School. Volunteers from multiple departments presented to over 300 students in the school’s science classes.
The presentation began with an introduction to Toray and CMA. Then, the students learned about major environmental issues and Toray’s solution to these issues—carbon fiber. Students then got a hands-on experience with carbon fiber and steel—comparing the properties and benefits of CMA’s product.
After learning about carbon fiber, presenters taught students about the different filters that Toray uses to convert water to be drinkable. Students experimented using Ultrafiltration (UF) filter and orange juice to demonstrate how a UF filter can separate water particles from orange juice particles.
At the end of the presentation, CMA volunteers took questions from the students and each individually explained their role at CMA. From Operations and Technical to HR and Production, students were educated about the qualifications needed for various professions and what opportunities are available in the STEM field.
The previous presentation CMA held at Liberty Middle School was ten years prior in 2015—so being able to return to Liberty Middle School was a great opportunity and experience for our CMA employees. We hope that we can continue motivating and teaching local students about the benefits of Toray’s composite materials and other products.
